Topic description
Industrial relations theory and perspectives: unitarist, pluralist, radical, partnership. The nature of industrial conflict; The development of employee relations in Australia; The role of the state (including legislative framework), unions, employers and their associations; interests of other stakeholders. Workplace bargaining and dispute resolution processes; International issues.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with an overview of employment relations issues in historical and contemporary contexts. This includes an understanding of the way in which work is organised, the nature of the employment relationship, and the plurality of interests amongst stakeholders. It also aims to track emerging international issues in the field.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of the topic, students should be able to:
  • understand the main theories of employment relations
  • critically analyse the development of the Australian employment relations 'system' including the regulatory environment
  • understand the nature of industrial conflict and be aware of the options available for dispute resolution
  • be conversant with various models of bargaining and types of workplace agreements
  • be able to identify emerging international issues relating to employment relations
