Topic description
Students will design and carry out an independent empirical investigation and report their findings, leading to a thesis of approximately 18,000 words in length, under the supervision of a member of the academic staff in the Flinders Business School. The thesis must provide evidence of the student's abilities in researching and evaluating information; constructing, testing and defending an argument and critically examining the dominant literature and theories in their area of enquiry.
Educational aims
The Honours thesis aims to:
  • Provide an opportunity for students to develop an understanding of research and the skills necessary to conduct a study in an area of the student's interest, with the assistance of a supervisor
  • Provide the chance to enhance research skills by working in an intensive way and reading widely on a particular issue
  • Enable a student to show originality in the writing of an extended piece of argument which is supported by a range of evidence
  • Adequately prepare the student for postgraduate work
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students will be able to:
  • Define an appropriate research problem and relate it to the relevant theoretical literature
  • Design an appropriate research methodology to address a selected problem
  • Collect, and/or analyse and interpret data relating to the selected research problem
  • Communicate research results clearly and concisely according to scholarly practice
