Course context
This is a component of an 18 unit topic. Students must enrol in all components and complete the full number of units for the Honours thesis.
Topic description
Students will design and carry out an independent empirical investigation and report their findings in a thesis of approximately 18,000 words in length under the supervision of a member of the academic staff in the Flinders Business School. The thesis must provide evidence of the student's abilities in researching and evaluating information; constructing, testing and defending an argument and critically examining the dominant literature and theories in their area of enquiry.
Educational aims
The Honours thesis aims to:
  • Provide an opportunity for students to develop an understanding of research and the skills necessary to conduct a study in an area of the student's interest, with the assistance of a supervisor
  • Provide the chance to enhance research skills by working in an intensive way and reading widely on a quite particular issue
  • Enable a student to show originality in the writing of an extended piece of argument which is supported by a range of evidence
  • Adequately prepare the student for postgraduate work
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
  • Define an appropriate research problem and relate it to the relevant theoretical literature
  • Design an appropriate research methodology to address a selected problem
  • Collect, and/or analyse and interpret data relating to the selected research problem
  • Communicate research results clearly and concisely according to scholarly practice
