Topic description
This topic is suitable for students with little or no prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese. It is a topic on written and spoken Mandarin Chinese for Beginner students. It introduces all of the sounds of Chinese along with basic grammatical patterns as it covers such basic conversation needs as greetings and introductions. In addition to learning how to represent Chinese sounds in the Pinyin system of transcription, students will learn the rudiments of writing Chinese characters.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to introduce beginner students to:

  • the Pinyin Romanisation system for standard Mandarin Chinese

  • the sounds, structures and vocabulary of standard Mandarin Chinese

  • Chinese characters and character writing techniques
Expected learning outcomes
As a result of this topic, students will be able to:

  • achieve acceptable pronunciation of Pinyin (Chinese Romanisation) transcription, including initial and final sounds and tones, in an understandable way, and transcribe syllables and tones in Pinyin

  • participate in simple Chinese conversation, such as greeting and introducing people and asking and answering questions, using appropriate word and sentence stress and conveying appropriate emotions

  • read and write about 200 Chinese characters using the correct strokes in the correct order
