Topic description
This is the first topic on written and spoken Mandarin Chinese for Upper Intermediate students. It will focus on expressing feelings, opinions, and concerns, and describing aspects of the world in greater detail in spoken Chinese, and writing in Chinese for simple purposes, such as notes, invitations and personal diaries.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • develop students knowledge of and ability to use moderately complex grammatical structures and vocabulary in standard Mandarin Chinese

  • develop students ability to discuss themselves and the world around them in standard Mandarin Chinese

  • further develop students writing skills for everyday purposes

  • further develop students ability to participate in conversations in standard Mandarin Chinese
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • speak, read and write the more widely used types of grammatically simple, compound and complex sentences in standard Mandarin Chinese

  • express their feelings, opinions, and concerns in spoken standard Mandarin Chinese using culturally appropriate vocabulary and grammatical forms

  • describe aspects of the world in greater detail in spoken standard Mandarin Chinese using culturally appropriate vocabulary and grammatical forms

  • write in Chinese characters for everyday purposes, such as notes, invitations and personal diaries

  • use a spoken and written vocabulary of at least 1500 standard Mandarin words in conversation and in spoken and written exercises
