Topic description
This is the second topic on written and spoken Mandarin Chinese for Upper Intermediate students. It will cover the effective use of spoken Chinese and appropriate cultural behaviour for most purposes of daily life, including normal social activities, study, and brief speeches expressing their views; understanding the gist of short articles written in Chinese characters, without reference to a dictionary; expressing themselves well in connected written Chinese passages for practical daily purposes, such as personal letters, and being able to use a Chinese-English dictionary to expand their vocabulary further.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • further develop students knowledge of and ability to use moderately complex grammatical structures and vocabulary in standard Mandarin Chinese

  • further develop students ability to participate in conversations in standard Mandarin Chinese for everyday, social and study purposes

  • further develop students knowledge and understanding of Chinese characters

  • further develop students writing skills for everyday and social purposes

  • expand students knowledge of and ability to apply culturally appropriate behaviour in the Chinese-speaking world

  • develop students ability to use a Chinese-English dictionary for language learning purposes
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • speak, read and write widely used types of grammatically simple, compound and complex sentences in standard Mandarin Chinese, including such structures as 'ba' sentences and the passive

  • effectively use spoken standard Mandarin Chinese and appropriate cultural behaviour for most purposes of daily life, including social activities, study, and brief speeches expressing their views

  • describe what short articles written in Chinese characters are about, without reference to a dictionary

  • express themselves well in connected written passages, including for practical daily purposes, such as personal letters

  • use a spoken and written vocabulary of at least 1800 standard Mandarin Chinese words in conversation and in spoken and written exercises

  • use a Chinese-English dictionary to further build their vocabulary
