Topic description
ICT fundamentals; key concepts and terminology of computing and information technology. Advanced information literacy, electronic information discovery and retrieval and the use of software applications to produce technical reports and documentation. Security issues, risk management, backup and disaster recovery; legal issues; social issues and ethics, accessibility and the digital divide. Information systems: Role, scope and limitations; Shannon's Information Theory Managing and operating IT Environments, evaluating information systems. Technical considerations relating to implementation, management and maintenance, and other considerations including human and social factors; Cloud computing and mobile information systems. Principles of Information System Development; Software Engineering; Quality assurance and the role of standards. Examples of ICT applications including Knowledge based and expert systems, Simulation, Artificial intelligence.
Educational aims
This topic aims to achieve two important goals:

  1. Broad-based computer literacy, covering key IT concepts and associated terminology
  2. Basic competency in the use of common personal productivity applications
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the main subject areas in IT, and the interrelationships that exist between them, so that the nature and major concepts of each area can be discussed
  2. Understand and use the general terminology of information technology
  3. Understand the basic organisation of a computer and the way information systems are built out of simpler subsystems
  4. Demonstrate basic skills in the use of interactive graphical interface environments
  5. Demonstrate practical skills in the use of common types of application software packages
