Assumed knowledge
It is assumed that students will have successfully completed an undergraduate degree including study in either chemistry of physics.
Topic description
In this topic students can undertake an individual research project. Projects will be offered in one of the research laboratories in the School, the areas available depending on staff availability. In principle any area may investigated, but this will be limited by the availability of a suitable academic supervisor.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with an introduction to research in their chosen field of chemistry or physics. This introduction requires that students design and carry out an individual research project suitable for third year level students. The students will gain exposure to how a research project is initiated, planned, costed and executed. Alternatively the students undertaking the work placement aspect of the topic will be exposed to chemistry and physics in a non-university setting.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Initiate, design, cost and carry out an individual research project
  2. Execute experiments to test the hypothesis under investigation
  3. Potentially be involved in a relevant work placement outside the university setting
  4. Interpret the result obtained from experiments undertaken
  5. Evaluate and present results from laboratory work in written and oral form
  6. Propose new experiments at the end of the project based on results obtained
