Topic description
In this topic students produce a thesis of 18000 words resulting from consultation within the sector and under the guidance of an academic supervisor. The Creative Enterprise thesis provides the opportunity for students to engage in high level independent but supervised research that is relevant to both the academic pathway of higher degrees and the sector’s increasing need for sophisticated research methodologies to demonstrate the value and impact of creative enterprise endeavours.
Educational aims
For students to be ready to enter the creative industries workforce with the skills, capabilities and knowledge basis to recognise extant, new and emerging opportunities in the field of culture, creative industries and enterprise. To be able to assess the sector critically and practically. For students to develop the capacity to provide analysis, advice and guidance, as appropriate, to the various stakeholders in the cultural industries (government, institutions, sole traders, entrepreneurs and artists etc.).
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate high level independent research reflection and analytical skills within a specified and collaboratively generated prompt
  2. Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills
  3. Develop an understanding of their own place in the world of creative industries
  4. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of an area, sector or region of creative enterprise
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the different textual constructs active in the creative industries and structure a thesis or journal article that reflects this understanding
  6. Demonstrate the capacity to plan and execute a complicated and sustained project across a year-long time frame.
