Topic description
This topic is a compulsory component in the Honours program for English and Creative Writing students. Students will explore discipline-specific research methodologies during an intense six program (i.e. over the first six weeks of the topic). This six-week program includes discussion/application of the following:

  • benchmarking Honours-level research/practical research skills

  • working with secondary sources

  • theoretical approaches to research

  • methodologies for creative research; methodologies for literary research

  • ethical research

  • writing at Honours level

In the final four/five weeks of the topic, students will present a research proposal to be delivered as a presentation and in written form.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with the research tools needed to complete an Honours project

  • instil in students an awareness of the creative and/or critical methodologies that they use in their creative and/or critical practices
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will have gained:

  • skills in a range of research activities including database/internet research, ethical research, primary and secondary analysis, applying secondary material and theory, and advanced creative/critical writing skills

  • the ability to communicate research skills and knowledge via oral and written communication/assessment

  • advanced oral and written communication skills
