Topic description
This topic is a component in the Honours program for English and Creative Writing students. Reading Like a Writer builds on core literary knowledge from undergraduate literature topics by examining foundational literary texts and theories of intertextuality, parody and allusion. In this topic, students will be given a literary case study to explore these theories. Students will complete an analysis of a primary literary text (or texts) and of associated theoretical material.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with the skills in literary analysis, and more specifically in understanding literary theories, needed to complete Honours-level work

  • instil in students an awareness of literary texts and related criticism, and to impart advanced literary theories and concepts related
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will have gained:

  • further skills in literary analysis: advanced, critical reading skills

  • a further developed ability to communicate literary knowledge via written communication/assessment
