The aim of this topic is to introduce students to the professional environment and structures in which their discipline works. This topic aims to provide a supportive environment in which students will be mentored to:

Identify and understand current topical issues in the disciplines they have chosen to study
Appreciate the nature, utility and limitations of the scientific method
Be able to apply this knowledge to investigate a broad range of scientific and non-scientific problems through critical analysis
Understand the political, economic and cultural contexts in which scientists work
Be adept at working effectively in multidisciplinary teams and valuing diverse points of view
Be effective oral, written and interpersonal communicators to a wide range of audiences
Be empowered to become lifelong learners who are able and willing to cope with change
Act ethically as professionals

At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

Appreciate the nature, utility and limitations of the scientific method
Investigate a broad range of scientific and non-scientific problems through critical analysis
Appreciate the socio-economic issues involved in the development of new technologies
Have the skills to be effective in multidisciplinary teams
