Topic description
This topic combines the traditional training of Classical Ballet and the theoretical study of Contemporary Dance Performance with its origins. Students will develop a critical approach to the study of dance, including the relationship between practice and theory, the ability to place dance in an historical framework, and political, social, and culture issues that affect dance performance.

The classical training is an integral and complementary aspect of a contemporary dancer's training and provides physical rigor that strengthens the body.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • Introduce classical ballet exercises, concepts and terminology at a developing level
  • Build on the dancers flexibility, strength and coordination in the technique
  • Encourage a self-disciplined approach to training
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a developing level of skill in Classical Ballet in a range of activities
  • Demonstrate increasing physical dexterity, range and control in set vocabularies
  • Respond to instruction from lecturers whilst applying a personal regime of self-development/improvement
  • Be able to discuss a number of issues and theory in the Dance Critical Studies, and how these may apply to practice
