Topic description
In this topic the technical dance training is designed to extend and refine the skills of the students. They will be offered the opportunity to develop their own classroom exercises under supervision to support their understanding of the discipline. It will also include advanced improvisation sessions, tumbling and mat work.

Compositional studies will be reintroduced to further the creative collaborative skills of the performer. A particular emphasis will be placed on the exploration of the relationship between dance and music
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with skills to:

  • Consolidate, refine and develop contemporary dance techniques and their practical and theoretical knowledge
  • Build on the their knowledge of the functionality and design of movement
  • Further develop diverse approaches to training in contemporary dance through improvisation, tumbling and mat exercises
  • Explore and practice compositional structures and devices as they relate to recent and current industry practice
  • Encourage students to work collaboratively in group devised choreography
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an advanced skill level in the approach to, and the execution of, contemporary dance techniques
  • Employ improvisation and mat work as modes of contemporary dance training
  • Explore, develop and teach original exercise content with knowledge of the function or intention
  • Compose short dance studies that draw on current and recent industry practice and which show the relationship between musical and dance structures
  • Critically analyse and evaluate compositional studies in writing and as part of a discussion process and provide feedback to peers
