Topic description
In this topic students will be introduced to the principles and practice of point-of-care pathology testing (POCT) and the specific role that POCT has in disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with the principles and practice of point-of-care pathology testing (POCT), and specific knowledge concerning the role, scope, applications and organisation of POCT services to support disaster health care.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic, students will be able to:
- Articulate the basic principles and practice of POCT
- Debate the potential need for POCT preparedness as part of an overarching disaster plan
- Describe the differences in the application of POCT in disaster events between developed and developing world settings
- Evaluate the fitness for purpose of a range of POCT devices and tests available for use in disaster situations
- Describe the key roles and responsibilities of a disaster POCT supervisor
- Design and optimise tailored POCT services for specific disaster response situations.
