DRAM1001 must be taken by all students who intend to major in Drama. It is also available as a cognate topic.

As an introduction to the history and theories of performance, this topic examines a range of genres and styles as well as the relationships between text and performance. It also examines performance as text and aims to develop students' skills in reading both text and performance while encouraging cogent discussion skills and the ability to write analytically, critically and creatively.

This topic aims to:

assist students to make the transition to university life and help them understand the value of learning with peers and colleagues
introduce students to a range of historically and stylistically significant drama texts and demonstrate their implications for theatrical performance
develop students' critical thinking and their ability to consider key issues in both group settings and individual study
develop students' research and writing skills in a variety of forms

For successful completion of this topic, students will:

be able to demonstrate a close knowledge of the set texts and understand their significance within the history of drama
be able to contribute to group discussions including presenting seminars
have gained research skills to assist them in formulating essays and seminar papers
be able to produce a written review after attending a theatre performance
