Topic description
How do we think about performance today? What defines a performance? And what makes it work? This topic introduces students to useful ideas for thinking about performance, such as space and place, time and event, the body in action, performativity, presence and desire. Students learn to use these ideas in analysing performance across a broad spectrum of genres, including postdramatic theatre, postmodern dance, physical theatre and circus, rituals and festivals, spectacles and parades.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- increase students' knowledge and appreciation of useful ideas for thinking about performance
- enable students explore these ideas in practice through class activities, screenings and discussions
- enhance students' ability to analyse performance and understand how it works
- encourage students to adopt a reflexive, inquiry-based approach to performances they take part in
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will:
- be able to recognise and describe useful ideas for thinking about performance
- be able to use ideas to speak and write about performance in an intelligent and affective manner
- be able to analyse a performance and explain how it works from different perspectives as performer, spectator and participant
- become familiar with theories of performance across a broad spectrum of genres
