Topic description
This topic explores the ways traditional theatre and performance practices in Asia have interacted with modern and contemporary developments in local and global cultural contexts. We will use significant works as case studies to examine a range of performance genres, including experimental, and to investigate the work of major artists, companies and organisations in Asian and Australasian performance culture.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce a range of culturally and stylistically significant Asian and Australasian drama and theory texts and demonstrate their performance implications;

  • introduce a range of significant artists, companies and organisations which shape performance cultures in Asia and Australasia;

  • provide students with the opportunity to develop an historically and culturally nuanced perspective on analysing Asian and Australasian performance;

  • develop students’ ability to think, speak and write about Asian and Australasian performance traditions and current developments in a critically engaged, aesthetically informed and ethically responsive manner.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • describe the significance of selected dramatic/performance works and theoretical texts and their contribution to shaping the interaction between traditional performance practices and modern/contemporary developments in Asia and Australasia;

  • apply appropriate dramaturgical and aesthetic criteria in analysing Asian and Australasian drama, theory and performance and evaluating their ways of embodying local and global cultural contexts;

  • contribute thoughtfully to group discussion, respond constructively to seminar presentations and demonstrate ability to engage independently with Asian and Australasian performance practices;

  • demonstrate competency in the practice of documentation and responsible intra- and inter-cultural research.
