Topic description
This topic will cover the stages of human development across the life span, from infancy to ageing. Human development will be examined from the viewpoints of physical, intellectual, social/emotional growth and change. Issues to be covered include: the interacting influence of environmental and hereditary factors upon the growing child; play and schooling; adolescence and independence; work and friendship; parenting; marriage and divorce; and healthy ageing.
Educational aims
  • To examine methods of studying individuals across the life span.

  • To present theories of development and critically evaluate their application in explaining behaviour and learning across the life span.

  • To facilitate critical thinking and debate in relation to key issues associated with life span development, for example, heredity and environment.

  • To examine physical, cognitive and psychosocial development across the life span.

Expected learning outcomes
At the conclusion of this topic students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to apply methods of observation and analysis of results in relation to developmental stages
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of theories of development, including their application across various stages of life using positive, person first language
  3. Critically evaluate key issues associated with life span development, including the impact of heredity and environment
  4. Undertake clear verbal communication in a group setting, participate in problem solving and contribute to group and class discussion
  5. Describe physical, cognitive and psychosocial development across the lifespan, that is, from infancy, through childhood, adolescence, adulthood and ageing.
