Assignments

This topic will address the issues which a professional needs to understand in order to plan for the health care needs of a person with a disability. Specific information is provided on the causes of disabilities and remedial/educational implications, health care, and medication issues. The aim is to equip students with sufficient knowledge to provide constructive input to team discussions of an individual's health care needs, and sufficient skills to address the personal care and community access needs of people with a range of disabilities.

This topic addresses the issues that a professional needs to understand in order to plan for the health care needs of a person with a disability.

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

Discuss the important health care issues that may affect the care, management, and education of a person with a disability.
Identify the common syndromes associated with disability and discuss the health implications and educational/remedial/management issues related to the common syndromes.
Discuss specific health care issues that are often relevant to people with a disability.
Describe the effects of ageing, and be able to discuss the optimal management of environments to promote choice and independence.
Discuss the main psychiatric conditions prevalent in our society and be aware of general management/treatment strategies.
Demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics involved in abusive relationships and the role and duties of professionals who may become aware of such abuse.
Demonstrate an understanding of relationship and sexuality issues for people with a disability and the role that the health professional may play in helping people to develop satisfactory personal outcomes in these areas.
