This topic examines both the concepts and role of community development in the lives of people who are marginalised in our communities. Community participation and lifestyle choices provide the context for exploration of the issues, principles and practices related to community development. This topic also provides an opportunity for students to learn about basic principles of community development, project management and submission writing. Particular populations who are currently, or who are at risk of social isolation and limited community participation will be considered, including individuals living with disability.

This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore and learn about:

1. Current research and practice within a local, international and international perspective relating to community development and community grant funding and tendering systems.

2. Meaning, recent social history and benefits of community development in facilitating opportunities for the social inclusion of individuals at risk of being socially isolated from their communities, including Indigenous communities.

3. Role of community development and relevance of participation in community activities of choice, and the link to quality of life.

4. Activities, strategies, roles and responsibilities of professionals working across a range of human service disciplines with community development as an aspect of their role.

5. Principles of undertaking a project to create increased opportunities for socially marginalised individuals such as people living with disability with a focus on development of a project proposal and funding submission.

On completion of this topic students must demonstrate they can:

• LO1: Locate and critically analyse current literature relating to community development.

• LO2: Articulate a sound knowledge of the meaning and benefits of community for individuals who are/or at risk of being socially isolated.

• LO3: Articulate the role of the community development worker and reflect on individual capacity for that role.

• LO4: Develop a program outline and funding submission for a project that increases opportunties for participation in community activities for individuals who are/or are at risk of social isolation including people living with disability.

• LO5: Undertake clear written and verbal communication in a group setting, participate in problem solving and make a clear verbal or online discussion around issues of community development and funding involving marganalised groups including people living with disability
