This topic provides opportunities for students to extend their experience working alongside professionals in the field to build upon awareness and professional competencies gained from previous paid or practicum experience. Examination of the role of service provision in the lives of people living with disability and their families continues. Community, education, health and lifestyle provide the context for exploration of practices that support a life of choice for people living with disability with a focus on individual supports and relationships. Students from the Bachelor of Disability and Developmental Education enrolled in this topic are commencing their second Practicum placement.

This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to learn about:

• Working alongside professionals in the provision of services to people living with disability and those who support them.

• Developing an awareness of key issues and professional competencies.

• Basic research and critical analysis skills.

• Current research and practice relating to provision of services to individuals living with disability.

• Issues relating to provision of quality services with a focus on supporting individual goals and aspirations as well as a range of social relationships.

• Developing effective professional relationships with people living with disability and their significant others.

• Being self-reflective about their own practices and performance in the provision of services to people living with disability.

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

• LO1: Discuss key concepts related to friendship and sexual relationship development for people with a disability.

• LO2: Demonstrate an understanding of person-centered planning and social network analysis.

• LO3: Identify by observation and interview, the social network of an individual they are supporting in their practicum role, and report and analyse findings.

• LO4: Develop a positive relationship with people with a disability and their significant others.

• LO5: Work effectively with other professionals and be self reflective about their own performance as a human service provider.

• LO6: Reflect on their professional development.
