This topic looks at inclusive Information and Communication Technology (iICT) and it aims to look at new and emerging technologies that may be useful to people with a disability. It is not about learning how to use a technology but rather how to look at technologies with new eyes to see a new use or potential. The technologies are examined in terms of a person centred approach and the fit with the National Standards for Disability Services. The topic considers the use of technology across the lifespan and is relevant to special education and disability services.

The aim of this topic is to provide students with the opportunity to learn about:

• A range of technologies and their potential benefits and possible issues for individuals living with disability

• Searching and critically analysing literature

• A range of uses for technology linked to particular supports needs aimed at supporting increased participation in social relationships, activities of daily living, leisure and community participation, education and vocational pursuits.

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

LO1: Demonstrate awareness of the use of ICT in special
education and disability services
LO2: Discuss the range of current technology available to assist
people with disabilities to function more independently in education and the general community
LO3: Review the available literature in an area of ICT that may be relevant to disability
LO4: Demonstrate the ways in which an area of technology may assist a person with a disability in their education and/or other aspects of life.
