It is assumed that students undertaking this topic will have a background and/or knowledge base that includes normal human development, communication and language development, and methods and strategies for teaching and motivating individuals.

This topic will build on students knowledge of programming methodology with a focus on preschool aged children. The emphasis will be on working with families, inter-professional approaches and strengths based models of learning. Particular populations who clearly benefit from early intervention will be explored such as children with developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, sensory impairment and other conditions. Using play to promote early learning will be a focus of the topic.

The aim of this topic is to provide students with the opportunity to explore and learn about:

Models of best practice in working with young children with diverse learning needs.
Current research and practice relating to play and the link with early intervention.
Benefits of play and early intervention in facilitating skill development in children with diverse learning needs.
Assessment, planning and implementation of effective play and early intervention programs for children with diverse learning needs.
Current models of early intervention service delivery.

On completion of the topic students will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the major models of early intervention used in Australian and other contexts
Explain the importance of play in a child's development and be able to give examples of the ways in which beneficial play experiences might be constructed
Provide written evidence of the ability to provide appropriate program directions and support for a young child with a disability/condition
Explain the critical role of early intervention in promoting development of children with developmental delays
Have a broad understanding of a range of delays and disorders and their impact on play, social engagement and the overall development of children
Develop and utilise skills in researching information to respond to clinical questions and other problems encountered in the field.
