Topic description
This topic focuses on historical and contemporary philosophies and perspectives that underpin current support for people with intellectual disabilities. Students will gain an understanding of current lifespan issues from intellectual disability literature including: human rights; psychosocial; health and well-being; communication; community/social inclusion; and self-advocacy. Students will learn to apply their knowledge to the provision of support to enhance the quality of life of people living with an intellectual disability.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Examine a range of literature on intellectual disability and address issues in relation to definition, education, transition education, community inclusion, employment and quality of life.

  • Present best practice in the field of intellectual disability.

  • Pursue areas of interest in relation to intellectual disability.

  • Facilitate critical thinking and debate in relation to key issues associated with theory and practice in the field of intellectual disability.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of historical and socio-political influences on the lives of people with intellectual disability
  2. Demonstrate critical insight to Community/Social Inclusion, Self Advocacy, Human Rights and Empowerment issues for people with intellectual disability
  3. Recognise and discuss support needs of individuals with intellectual disability and their families
  4. Demonstrate insight to what contributes to quality of life for people with intellectual disability
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of best practice in communicating with, educating and supporting individuals with intellectual disability across the lifespan.
