Topic description
This topic focuses on the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and the socio-political influences throughout history which have fashioned current policy, practice and treatment of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Many of the historical issues around intellectual disability that were discussed and debated in the past re-occur at different times in the course of history with their solutions still continuing to evolve. This topic is designed to enable students to gain an understanding of the historical influences on development of services and support and apply their knowledge to the present and future impact on the lives of people with intellectual disability.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Examine a range of literature on intellectual disability and address issues in relation to definition, education, transition education, community inclusion, employment and quality of life.

  • Present best practice in the field of intellectual disability.

  • Pursue areas of interest in relation to intellectual disability.

  • Facilitate critical thinking and debate in relation to key issues associated with theory and practice in the field of intellectual disability.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students should be able to:

  1. Describe the criteria associated with the definition of intellectual disability.

  2. Provide an insight into the personal stories of people with intellectual disability.

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the implications of historical events and socio-political forces on the field of intellectual disability.

  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges experienced by individuals with intellectual disability.

  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the family issues associated with intellectual disability.

  6. Recognise and discuss the support needs of individuals with intellectual disability and their families.

  7. Discuss the characteristics of individuals with an intellectual disability and the related instructional and support strategies.

  8. Recognise and understand best practice in educating and supporting individuals with intellectual disability.
