Topic description
This topic provides an extension to Practicum Specialisation 3 for students seeking the opportunity for an extended 9 unit practicum experience in one semester. The practicum specialisations provide students with choice to apply in practice a specialist area of study within a more focussed organisational setting. A practicum specialisation should be linked to in-depth study into a specialist area or issue and can be linked to independent study.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to further develop their professional skills and learn about:

  1. Investigating theory and practice in relation to the development of an appropriate intervention and/or supports for an individual living with disability or group of people with specific support needs.

  2. Facilitate critical thinking and debate in relation to key issues associated with theory and practice in a specialist field of human service provision with a focus on supporting individuals living with disability.

  3. Enable students with minimal supervision to design, implement and evaluate an intervention, service model or management system designed to support the needs of individuals of groups of people with specific support needs.

  4. Being self reflective about their own practices and performance in the provision of services to people living with disability.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students must demonstrate they can

  1. Critically evaluate research and practice in relation to individuals with specific support needs.

  2. Recognise and discuss best practice in relation to individuals with specific support needs around management of disability and other relevant human service organisations.

  3. Use knowledge from research and practice in designing, implementing and evaluating a support program for an individual or small group of people with specific support needs.

  4. Utilise knowledge from research and practice to engage in the designing, implementing and evaluation of a specific service delivery model to people with specific support needs.

  5. Reflect on their practice and professional development.
