Topic description
This topic is designed to enable students to systematically search and critcially appraise literature in their chosen research topic in disability and obtain full ethics approval if needed. Students will be required via workshops and supervision to identify a research question, explore research methodology options, undertake a critcial appraisal of the literature, make a research proposal presentation and complete any relevant ethics applications. Students will be exposed to specific research designs such as Single Case Experimental Design and also prinicples of Inclusive research
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  1. Develop further students' knowledge in various research methodologies specifically focusing on methods relevant to their research questions.

  2. Support students to undertake a systematic approach to searching and critically appraising literature.

  3. Develop students’ general analytical and presentation skills and their capacity for independent research.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic the student will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Develop clear aims and research questions

  2. Critically evaluate research literature and build a clear and strong rationale for research.

  3. Identify the most appropriate research design and data collection methods to answer research questions

  4. Develop and present a research proposal including proposed data analysis.

  5. Understand various ethical issues in working with people living with disabilities and their families.

  6. Complete Human Research Ethics Application and obtain a full approval

  7. Demonstrate professional behaviours around the ability to work independently, plan and commence a research project within established time frames.
