Assignments; FLO Discussion
Topic description
This topic examines the development of language and communication in children and adults with communication difficulties. Typical language and communication development will be outlined with a brief discussion of models of language acquisition. Language and communication difficulties in people with specific disabilities will be explored as well as the critical role of early care-givers and teachers. Assessment issues will be discussed broadly, both in terms of the individual and the environment. Intervention strategies to facilitate language and communication will be examined. Specific attention will be given to early intervention, the needs of people with severe disabilities, and the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

As it is a Masters level topic, it is expected that you will be able to demonstrate advanced and integrated theoretical knowledge by defining, critically analysing and evaluating research outcomes from educational and community-based intervention approaches to enhance communication and language in people with autism, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, sensory disabilities and/or multiple disabilities.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  1. Review a range of literature on the development of language and communication in children and adults with communication difficulties.

  2. Analyse the connections made between language theory and practice in relation to normal development and development associated with language difficulties.

  3. Examine the critical role of early care-givers and teachers in the development of communication for children, including individuals with communication difficulties.

  4. Examine assessment tools, both in terms of the individual and the environment, and the links to communication and language intervention.

  5. Give specific attention to early intervention, bilingualism, the needs of people with severe disabilities and the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic it is expected students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of typical developmental processes in language and communication

  2. Identify assessment and intervention issues related to a range of communication and language difficulties

  3. Review an area of communication difficulty of particular interest to them and identify assessment and intervention strategies relevant to the disability

  4. Critically review and use current research literature to understand, support and/or refute your assessment and intervention recommendations.
