Topic description
This topic is concerned with interventions assisting persons with disabilities through the life-cycle, including those with intellectual disability, brain injury, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, vision and auditory impairment and others with learning difficulties. Students will be practically involved with concepts of prescriptive teaching and designing of individual educational and support programs; remedial teaching; and field experience in the assessment, remediation and evaluation of teaching programs designed to support people with disabilities. Theory and practice will be linked closely in this topic and it is planned that students carry out a wide range of assessments and apply theory to the development, application and evaluation of learning programs.
Educational aims
Aims of the topic:

  1. Provide students with the opportunity to investigate current theory and practice in relation to the development of appropriate interventions and supports for a person or group of people with particular disabilities.

  2. Facilitate critical thinking and debate in relation to key issues associated with theory and practice in the selected field/s of disability.

  3. Enable students to design, implement and evaluate an intervention/support program for an individual or group of people with particular disabilities.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate current

    research and practice in relation to support programs or services for individuals with a disability and/or their families.

  2. Recognise and discuss best practice in relation to individuals with a disability with specific support needs.

  3. Demonstrate an ability to evaluate the effectiveness of specific practices or strategies in supporting individuals with a disability and/or their families to achieve goals associated with an improved quality of life.

  4. Demonstrate an ability to be self-reflective and to accept professional responsibility to link theory to practice.
