Topic description
This topic allows students to pursue an individual course of study related to the disability field. Students may wish to consider a course of study that will lead into other topics, for example, the Advanced Practicum topic, Professional Practicum or Dissertation. A specific study area such as transition education, development of peer support or community engagement, whereby the theory and practice can be researched, may be implemented and evaluated for a following topic, such as those outlined above. The student is required to provide a description of the proposed study and submit for discussion and approval of the Topic Coordinator at the commencement of the topic.
Educational aims

The aim of this topic is to:

  1. Povide students with the opportunity to explore an area of interest and/or need within their work environment, or prospective work setting, associated with the field of disability studies, under individual guidance and supervision.

  2. Develop independent research skills associated with the selected area.

  3. Facilitate critical thinking and debate in relation to the area of interest.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to research independently a selected area of interest.

  2. Provide evidence of critical analysis of relevant resource material.

  3. Discuss key issues associated with the selected area.

  4. Articulate issues and questions that require further study.
