Topic description
This topic will provide an in-depth examination of disability, its historical context and its implications for the individual, the family, local communities and society. It will analyse some of the current philosophies that inform disability services and the way services are developing internationally. It will provide an examination of the disabling process, the disability rights movement and the move towards independence, choice and empowerment. It will provide information on vulnerability, resilience, the developmental process, quality of life and skills acquisition.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore and learn about:

  1. Historical overview of changing philosophies of disability and service provision, including consideration of Indigenous and multi-cultural perspectives.

  2. Principles of policy development and models of services and their impact on individuals, local communities and societies.

  3. Current research and practice impacting on individuals living with disability, including concepts such as, choice, quality of life, person centred approaches.

  4. Issues and barriers to community participation from the perspective of individuals living with disability, their supports and significant others.

  5. Emerging philosophies from the perspectives of the individual, family and society.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic students must demonstrate they can:

  1. Locate and critically analyse current literature relating to theory and practice around policy, service models and experiences of living with disability.

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the historical context of disability services.

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the differing perspectives of individuals, families and society in service provision, including Indigenous and multi-cultural perspectives.

  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the disabling process, the developmental process and the importance of skills acquisition in the exercise of independence and choice.

  5. Demonstrate a capacity to integrate the subject content in students¿ work practices and career goals.
