Topic description
This topic will provide an in-depth examination of the key issues facing leaders of disability services. Students will have an opportunity to develop an understanding of the complexities of disability services including limitations, power differentials and their impact on people with disabilities, working with multiple stakeholders, working with Indigenous individuals and communities, protecting the rights of people with disabilities, putting principles of inclusion into positive practice through service design and development. Students will be encouraged to recognise the need for fostering openness and innovation.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore and learn about:

  • Principles around effective leadership of disability and other human services.

  • Management models, frameworks and strategies to develop and lead positive service practices.

  • Complexity of issues as presented in research literature and by current professionals and strategies to manage effective change and interventions.

  • The fundamentals of providing leadership in services to a culturally and socially diverse group of people.

Expected learning outcomes
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the key issues facing leaders of disability services

  2. Demonstrate a capacity to develop strategies to resolve these issues

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of how the values underpinning disabilities, Indigenous and multi-cultural contexts are integrated into management practices

  4. Articulate an increased understanding of their own attitudes and values and their influence on their management style

  5. Integrate subject content into their work and career goals
