Topic description
This introductory topic examines the processes of ageing, including theoretical and practical issues as they relate to individuals living with disability. The role of professional supports in relation to assisting an individual living with disability to remain well, independent and engaged in self-determination along with making plans to support any changes to physical and environmental needs as they age will be explored.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore and learn about:

  1. Principles around what it means to age and the role of professionals in the management of ageing

  2. Current research and practice relating to ageing for individuals living with disability. Including the issues and barriers to well-being experienced by individuals living with disability who are ageing

  3. Models of supports and services available to individuals living with disability who are ageing to promote well-being and independence.

  4. Principles of undertaking an assessment and developing a life plan to support individuals living with disability who are ageing to maintain independence and promote health and well-being.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students must demonstrate they can:

  1. Locate and critically analyse current literature relating to theory and practice around ageing for individuals living with disability.

  2. Observe and assess the indicators of well being for people who are ageing.

  3. Articulate a sound knowledge of the issues and experiences of individuals living with a disability who are ageing and their supports.

  4. Undertake an assessment and develop a life plan that outlines a comprehensive program to increase the well being, maintain independence and self determination of an individual living with disability who is ageing.

  5. Undertake clear written and verbal communication in a group setting, participate in problem solving and make a clear verbal or online discussion around issues facing individuals living with a disability who are ageing.
