Topic description
This topic examines both the concepts and role of leisure and the arts in the lives of people living with disability. Community participation and lifestyle choices provide the context for exploration of the issues, principles and practices related to participation in leisure and the arts. The advantages, potential issues and complexities of involvement in leisure, sports and or the arts across the life-span for all people will be explored. This topic also provides an opportunity for students to learn about principles of planning and managing leisure experiences, arts workshops, events and productions as well as evaluating leisure and arts services for individuals or small groups.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore and learn about:

  1. Meaning, history and benefit of involvement in recreation, leisure and the arts for all people across the lifespan.

  2. Research, critical analysis and service evaluation skills.

  3. Relevance of participation in activities of choice, the link to quality of life and management of complex issues that may act as barriers to participation.

  4. Current research and practice relating to leisure and the arts with a focus on people living with disability.

  5. Models of leisure and arts available to individuals living with disability.

  6. Principles of undertaking a project to create increased opportunities for individuals living with disability, with a focus on development of a project proposal and evaluation plan.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students must demonstrate they can:

  1. Locate and critically analyse current literature relating to leisure and the arts.

  2. Articulate a sound knowledge of the meaning, history and benefits of participation in leisure and the arts for individuals living with disability across the lifespan.

  3. Develop a comprehensive project proposal and evaluation plan for a project that increases opportunities for participation in sport, arts or leisure for individuals living with disability. Including locating possible funding sources.

  4. Undertake clear written and verbal communication in a group setting, participate in problem solving and make a clear verbal or online discussion around issues of participation in leisure and the arts involving marginalised groups including people living with disability.
