Topic description
This topic introduces students to the contemporary economic, social and cultural transformations in the Global South - the regions of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Students examine the changing role of the Global South in the world, and how this impacts on the ways in which the Global South is imagined and represented in academic and popular debates. Through case studies students will learn about the diversity within the Global South, ranging from emerging super-powers to impoverished states, and about ultra-modern, wealthy life-styles and extreme poverty often co-existing in the same country. The topic will also explore the links between the Global South and the Global North through aid, investment, migration and such like, and the different attempts and strategies to 'develop' the countries of the Global South.
