Topic description
This topic provides a comprehensive overview of the research process from project design and management to the effective communication of results to different audiences. The topic provides students with a structured opportunity to work towards development of their research project. More specifically, it reviews: the research process; research proposal development; ethical issues; research design and project management; sampling; research methods and data sources; interpreting results; and communicating research results. There is a strong practical component to the topic.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with:

  • An overview of research processes

  • An opportunity to practice specific research techniques (especially qualitative methods) used in social science

  • Instruction on scholarly and professional research communication.
  • Expected learning outcomes
    On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

    1. Prepare a coherent and comprehensive research proposal

    2. Reflect critically on ethical issues associated with research

    3. Explain the relative strengths and weaknesses of a variety of research methods employed commonly in social science

    4. Manage a research project

    5. Correctly employ an appropriate qualitative and/or quantitative research strategy to answer a specific l research question

    6. Present research findings, orally and in written form, in accordance with scholarly and professional practice.
