Course context
In order to enhance learning, students taking the topic in internal and external modes will work on tasks both individually and collectively using Flinders Learning Online.

Topic description
This topic will consider the key concepts, frameworks, approaches and tools used by practitioners to undertake gender analysis within international agencies, non-government organisations, government agencies and community based organisations. Students will investigate these different ways of undertaking gender analysis in order to develop their critical understanding of doing gender analysis. Opportunities will be provided for students to develop their own gender analysis skills through the application of selected approaches and tools to policy, planning, project and budget related case studies from Australia and other countries.
Educational aims
The key aims of this topic are to:
  • Consider the key concepts, frameworks, approaches and tools available for by practitioners to undertake gender analysis within international agencies, non-government organisations, government agencies and community based organisations
  • Investigate different ways of undertaking gender analysis in order for students to develop a critical understanding of 'doing' gender analysis
  • Provide opportunities for students to develop their own gender analysis skills through the application of selected approaches and tools to policy, planning, project and budget related case studies from Australia and other countries.

By the completion of this topic students should be able to:
  • Describe the historical context that underpins key gender analysis frameworks
  • Critically analyse the key concepts, frameworks, approaches and tools available to practitioners to undertake gender analysis
  • Identify appropriate gender analysis approaches and tools for application in particular contexts and circumstances
  • Apply and critique selected gender analysis approaches and tools to case studies.
