Topic description
This topic offers the basic knowledge needed to understand and to be able model physical fluids in motion in both porous media (groundwater) and non-porous media (the ocean). Following an introduction to theoretical aspects, students can chose from different sets of practical exercises. One set focuses on flows in porous media with applications of Darcy's Law in several case studies. The other set deals with oceanic applications and a practical guide to write own computer-based model codes.
Educational aims
The educational aim of this topic is to introduce students to physical laws applied to describe, understand and predict the behaviour of fluids in motion.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Outline the physical laws that describe fluids in motion in porous and non-porous media
  2. Have a knowledge of the associated techniques (finite-difference hydrodynamic modelling) and an ability to apply these techniques in a wide range of settings
  3. Apply computational modelling of complex dynamical systems
  4. Demonstrate enhanced problem-solving, critical-thinking and reasoning abilities
