Topic description
In this topic students conduct a literature review of pertinent literature relevant to the field of investigation. This literature review forms the basis for a written research proposal.
Educational aims
This topic is designed to provide students with training in the planning and design of research and investigation, including literature review, methodology development, preparation of project proposals, writing and seminar skills. The topic trains students to perform rigorous and comprehensive literature reviews scoped towards the development of project proposals and aimed at writing at review paper with the view to potential publication.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:
  1. Have a sound understanding of a broad range of groundwater hydrology theory and concepts
  2. Design a project methodology in order to solve an applied problem and/or answer questions about a groundwater system
  3. Scientifically, technically and critically evaluate existing groundwater hydrology research and investigation as a critical part of their research planning and design framework
  4. Draw well-informed conclusions from these critical reviews and make recommendations for future work in the form of a research proposal; and
  5. Communicate their results in writing by way of a written report/paper on the subject matter and verbally by way of a seminar given to their peers on the project work/review/proposal carried out
