Topic description
Mathematics education reform literature shows clearly that a thorough understanding of both mathematics and pedagogy is necessary for teaching it well. This topic allows students to build on their personal background experiences and understandings in mathematics and schooling regardless of whether these experiences are positive or negative. Students will have the opportunity to develop conceptual understanding of key mathematics principles through experiencing contemporary approaches to mathematics teaching and learning. This topic emphasises both the mathematical content and the pedagogies. Activities in workshops and on school visits are intended to increase mathematical knowledge as a basis for teaching, but they also focus on principles of instruction and assessment. This topic also involves guided professional experience in a school that is undertaken in a block of 5 days.
