Course context
  • Students enrolled in the NS2 availability will attend 1 3-hour workshop weekly.
Topic description
This topic is designed to provide students with the opportunity to understand approaches to supporting students with literacy difficulties. There will be a focus on theories of literacy acquisition, factors that may influence literacy learning, teaching and learning approaches, and discussion about the impact of current issues, policies, and practices.
Educational aims
Through engaging in this topic participants will:

  • be aware of current literacy research focused on students with learning difficulties

  • understand how selection and interpretation of literacy assessments can inform program planning

  • develop knowledge and skills about how literacy intervention programs for students with learning difficulties may be implemented
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • describe major theories of literacy acquisition
  • identify key skills and knowledge needed for development of literacy
  • employ a variety of assessment and instructional methods
  • compare and contrast instructional approaches against evidence-based research
  • articulate ways in which teachers may assess and plan for literacy improvement
  • design lessons that meet diverse literacy learning needs
