Topic description
This topic aims to develop skills in historical and geographical enquiry and critical literacy by developing students' skills of analysis, interpretation and evaluation of sources of evidence and the ability to come to a well informed conclusion. It is also concerned with people's relationships to natural and built environments. It starts at an individual level, then expands to within the local community and eventually to the global world in which we live. Pedagogical skills such as unit planning, differentiation of the curriculum, evaluation of resources, assessment tools and the embedded use of technology will be applied and the enquiry-based approach of the International Baccalaureate will also be considered.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are for students to:

  • become critically literate practitioners and to be aware of the contestable nature of both History and Geography
  • explore the relationships of people with natural and built environments
  • engage with some key pedagogical approaches such as inquiry and problem based learning, that encourage school students to engage critically with information
  • develop an understanding of the different tools for assessing learning in History and Geography
  • work collaboratively as they plan units of work for teaching
Expected learning outcomes
That students will have:

  • created a relevant and engaging unit plan for teaching a contemporary Historical or Geographical issue while on their final Professional Teaching Practice
  • demonstrated an understanding of the contestable nature of History and Geography and the consequent challenges in planning a unit of work
  • recognised the need to foster in their own students the understanding and capacity to take action for a better world for all
  • planned to assess and record student learning and used this data for exploring reporting strategies and approaches
  • demonstrated a capacity to work collaboratively to achieve a common purpose through group discussions and presentations
