Topic description
This topic provides an introduction to the field of literacy in languages and related intercultural contexts, as well as a study of the role of ICT in languages pedagogy (R-7). The topic explores the teaching of genre in the language classroom with a particular focus on contexts of culture and situation.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to:

  • develop awareness and understanding of the aims of intercultural language teaching and the pedagogical applications possible in modern languages studies for years R-7
  • provide a review and evaluation of the principles of genre theory and related functional linguistics
  • introduce teaching strategies for encouraging intercultural competence in the languages classroom through the study of the connectedness of language and culture and the related contexts of cultural and situational expectations
Expected learning outcomes
Pre-service teachers will develop knowledge and skills in:

  • identifying and critiquing the key features of intercultural language teaching
  • identifying and critiquing the key elements of functional linguistics, related genre theory and the Vygotsky inspired learner centred teaching cycle
  • designing and planning lessons incorporating ICT, genre theory, functional linguistics, multimodal teaching and learning strategies and thereby implement computer assisted language learning (CALL) and text type teaching
  • planning and designing programs for implementing curriculum organisation in the R-7 languages classrooms
  • assessment, evaluation and reporting all elements of language teaching
  • evaluating lessons with a view to understanding the key features of successful learner centred, text type teaching in languages pedagogy
