Topic description
This topic will focus on the inclusion and embedding of literacy across the curriculum. Resources and research related to the teaching of literacy will be identified and critiqued to assist students to continue developing ways to apply theories of literacy learning in their classrooms and other educational settings. Students will explore the challenges of the teaching of literacy, literacy and new curriculum structures, community perceptions and expectations, literacy in a changing world, and issues about literacy education and the diverse social and cultural identities of students.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • an understanding of literacy, literacy education and related theories
  • a critical understanding of issues of literacy and literacy education
  • an understanding of what is required for socially just and effective literacy education
  • an understanding of communication processes and effective pedagogies for young people in the 21st Century
  • the ability to continue to develop professionally in the field of literacy education
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the concept of multi literacies and how to work as an educator to reduce the influence of socio-cultural contexts on students' achievement of the learning outcomes they aspire to
  • conduct research on literacy and literacy education
  • communicate understandings about literacy and literacy education to colleagues and members of the community
