Topic description
This topic introduces students to some of the key themes and issues relevant to an understanding of Asia in the contemporary world, including analysis of the concepts and definitions of Asia, Asian contributions to the world and Australia's relations with and place in Asia. It also covers the policy and curriculum frameworks that affect the development of school level programs in studies of Asia, along with a range of suggested teaching and learning strategies.
Educational aims
The topic aims to:

  • assist students to understand the reasons for, principles, and goals of studies of Asia across the curriculum, as established through relevant policy frameworks
  • challenge assumptions and stereotypical views regarding Asia, while supporting students to develop strategies for implementing studies of Asia in classroom contexts
Expected learning outcomes
As a result of completing this topic, it is expected that students will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of:

    • various views about what is meant by the term 'Asia' in geographical, historical, cultural and economic terms
    • selected aspects of a range of Asian societies and cultures
    • contemporary developments in the Asian region, and their significance for Australia
    • stereotypes that remain obstacles to the achievement of an understanding of modern Asia

  • formulate a clear rationale for teaching studies of Asia in Australian schools

  • evaluate relevant curriculum frameworks with regard to their potential for incorporating a balance of studies of Asia

  • develop and implement appropriate teaching and learning activities

  • develop and apply criteria for the selection and use of resource materials to support studies of Asia
