Topic description
This topic provides opportunities for students to analyse and synthesise the place of health and physical education in the primary school curriculum. Using inquiry processes, students are supported to identify and develop concepts, skills and positive attitudes towards health and physical education teaching and learning. The topic is designed to engage students with the processes involved in planning, implementing and evaluating programs of health education and physical education in the primary years. The topic emphasises the pre-service teachers' acquisition of health and physical education disciplinary knowledge.
Educational aims
This topic is designed to:

  • Enhance student confidence, knowledge and skills in primary years (R-7) Health and Physical Education learning and teaching.

  • Enable students to synthesise research in primary years (R-7) Health and Physical Education learning and teaching.

  • Enhance students' personal approach to in primary years (R-7) Health and Physical Education learning and teaching based on their critical inquiry and analysis of experience as well as in the light of a range of theoretical perspectives.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon completion of this topic pre-service teachers will:

  1. Be able to plan, analyse and critique a balanced, sequential program in health education and physical education for R-7 primary years.

  2. Possess current knowledge and an integrated understanding of the content, context and processes of learning and teaching in Health and Physical Education in the primary years of schooling (Reception to Year 7).

  3. Have communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions related to the content, context and processes of learning and teaching in Health and Physical Education in the primary years of schooling (Reception to Year 7)
