Topic description
This topic introduces literature studies in the teaching of English. Students are guided in programming and planning for teaching all aspects of the English curriculum to a particular class of students for a minimum period of six weeks. They are required to undertake a case study of a child with learning difficulties: gather data, summarise and analyse it and then present it with appropriate teaching plans to implement. They are expected to develop teaching plans with year level and context-appropriate content, to use a variety of research-based teaching methodologies and assessment tasks and demonstrate that they can plan for scaffolded learning. It is a requirement that they are able to evaluate their planning and their teaching performance and plans for this self -reflection and self-evaluation must also be developed. Once completed, these artifacts will be used to demonstrate skills and knowledge against the Australian Standards for Graduate Teachers.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce planning for the literature component of the English Curriculum;

  • assist in the contextualised long-term planning for a particular year level and class of children;

  • teach the use of case study methodology in researching a child’s learning difficulties; collecting data, analysing it and presenting it together with teaching plans for the particular child;

  • support the use of research-based teaching methodologies and assessment tasks;

  • require plans for self-reflection and self-assessment as a basis for future development, and

  • provide artefacts for evidence of skills and knowledge against the Australian Standards for Graduate Teachers.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will have:

  • planned for teaching literature studies;

  • undertaken long-term planning of the English Curriculum for a particular year level and in a particular context;

  • completed a case study research project and used it as a basis for planning for teaching;

  • planned to teach using research-based methodologies and assessment tasks;

  • demonstrated an ability to plan for self-reflection and self-evaluation, and

  • developed artefacts for their portfolio of evidence about attainment of the Australian Standards for graduate teachers.
