Topic description
This topic focusses on the concept of numeracy across the curriculum and the use of professional ICT in the design and delivery of pedagogical material. The key ideas addressed include: the nature of numeracy and critical numeracy; the professional numeracy and ICT demands in the teaching profession; the role of numeracy and applications of ICT within different curriculum areas; the inherent numeracy demands and opportunities within all curriculum areas and the opportunities and limitations associated with the use of ICT in the design of integrated pedagogical materials.
Educational aims
The aim of the topic is to:

  • develop a positive disposition toward numeracy and the use of ICTs

  • understand the responsibilities associated with teaching numeracy and the use of ICTs across the curriculum

  • be exposed to current research to critique numeracy and ICT within the curriculum

  • explore pedagogical approaches associated with numeracy and ICT
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic pre-service teachers will be able to:

  • demonstrate a critical understanding of numeracy in the community

  • demonstrate deep understanding of numeracy within learning areas

  • analyse and critique pedagogies associated with ICTs

  • create and evaluate learning activities that incorporate numeracy and ICT

  • analyse the ethics associated with ICTs in schools
