An understanding of the impact of vision impairment on learning and approaches to teaching and learning for this group of students.
Topic description
This topic will continue the investigation of aspects of the education of students with vision impairment as undertaken in Studies in Vision Impairment 1. It will focus on the psychology of visual perception and its relation to visual impairment, enhancement and training of perceptual skills, optics and low vision aids to enhance visual functioning, cortical vision impairment, deaf blindness, multiple disabilities and the organisation and integration of educational services. Particular attention will be given to research into specific eye conditions and the necessary adaptations to management, teaching and the classroom environment.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • present a global perspective of the education of students with vision impairment and those with vision impairment and other disabilities

  • explore the challenges of supporting students in a variety of settings, the competencies required by professionals and roles of teachers and others in delivering services to children with vision impairment

  • discuss the importance of early intervention and the challenges in working with families of young children with severe vision

  • examine eye conditions in depth focussing on medical aspects, treatment, effects on visual performance, possible impact on learning and specific adaptations and modifications to teaching strategies and classroom environments

  • examine strategies, methods, and practical suggestions that may be used when teaching students with vision impairment and provide some practical suggestions for teaching key learning areas within the curriculum
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • discuss policies, systems and practices in the education of students with a vision impairment from a global perspective

  • describe effective ways of working with students with severe vision loss, and vision impairment and other disabilities

  • discuss the importance of early intervention and describe effective ways of delivering services to young children and their families and caregivers

  • discuss common eye conditions in terms of the medical aspects of each condition, treatment, effects on visual performance, and possible impact on learning

  • understand and discuss curriculum requirements, adaptations and modifications and assistive technology for students with vision impairments and vision impairment and other disabilities

  • discuss the purpose of assessment, models of assessment and the types of assessment instruments used in Australia for students with vision impairment. vision impairment and other disabilities
